Has monitoring the cardiac health of Olympians’ parents for entertainment purposes always been a thing, or am I correct that parental heartbeats per minute didn’t used to be a speed skating statistic? #olympics

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for firing Noem, Miller, Homan, Bovino, etc. -- but the problem isn't that they failed to competently execute the President's vision. The problem is that they DID do exactly what he wanted.

The Laken Riley justification for ICE atrocities is so infuriating, because while OF COURSE any murder is a tragedy, a) as a policy matter the reaction of occupation of a major city is so grossly disproportionate to the scale of the problem (Texas, a state with 5 times the population of MN (1/2)

I remember when anti-LGBT types used to moralize about how they shouldn’t have to explain queerness to children, and in addition to all the ways that was wrong standing alone, I’m wondering today exactly how those folk think I should explain ICE to my toddlers.

Today, my 6-year old asked why Daniel Tiger does not wear pants, and had thought the question through enough to notice that he does wear pajama pants to bed. That was 20 or so seconds of beautiful distraction from [waves hand in general direction of reality].

Also, it didn’t end up mattering, but 1:56 left, 24-21 score, defense with 2 timeouts, 2nd and 1 from the 13, false start penalty. Wouldn’t Miami have been better off with an offsides? 2nd and 6 they are 6 yards from winning. 1st and goal from the 8, they’re 8 yards from winning, right?

Not excited for all the “no excuses, your school can do it too” takes on Indiana winning the natty, as if there are dozens of other Cignettis out there just waiting to be hired. But it still beats a gloating Michael Irvin or Paul Finebaum for unbearable post-championship smugness any day.

MLK Day is such a surreal holiday in the MAGA era. While there's assuredly some naivete there, too, when I was kid in California in the '90s it was an unremarkable day, in the best of senses. It wasn't until being an adult in Mississippi that I ever got a sense of people feeling it was "our" (1/2)

Strong throughs about the IL-08 democratic primary to replace Raja, anyone?

Capricorn b-days, did y'all resent all the Christmas pageantry going away right when you were trying to celebrate growing up, or did you want that other holiday to get out so you could claim your own time? I've always felt the first way (don't take the pretty lights away!), but I get the second...

I love me some World Cup draw, but gag me with a stick re: the political propaganda.

I think we finally have the definitive answer to the Colbert Questionnaire opener about what the best sandwich is...

Back in my journalism days, I used to cover city hall for a small town in Mississippi whose mayor would balk at the editing of quotes for brevity and clarity. He'd say something like "Complaining about affirmative action is a throwback to the days of inequity where one previously underserved (1/3)

The Emma Lazarus poem calls Lady Liberty's flame "imprisoned lightning." I think that means that if this government shutdown actually causes her torch to go dark (symbolism notwithstanding) it will be the first time the GOP has ever caused LESS imprisonment.

It’s been a long week at work, in the national news, etc. Why yes, a toddler birthday party thrown by vegan parents is absolutely where I want to be with Oregon-Penn State and Alabama-Georgia coming up, of course…

The problem with entering a profession where the reward for eating pie is more pie, is the difficulty not internalizing that you are lazy/failing when motivation to keep up with the never-ending churn wanes. It's enough trouble meeting my own responsibilities; you're hiring ME to manage yours, too?

I don't care about the Swift-Kelce engagement in the most neutral of ways: It doesn't bother me that it's big pop culture news. I don't care if they show her during Chiefs games. Cool. Whatever. But I am highly amused that I just got an ESPN fantasy alert about it, as if it will impact Kelce's stats

I should not be amazed by people living in an alternate reality in 2025, but I still am floored that there are Pat Fitzgerald fans who think anything short of sexual assault convictions for former players means hazing didn’t really happen and Fitz was unfairly canceled. (1/2)

The way previously “small government” folk will fall all over themselves to defend the military policing DC is such nakedly motivated reasoning it reminds me of the old quip that if Hannibal Lecter ran a 4.3 40, NFL scouts would say he just had an eating disorder.

I don’t really remember having a Mariners phase—Ken Griffey Jr. I assume—but who’d have thunk that would be the most normal thing about this photo 31 years later?

It's awesome that Yahoo! is rolling out guillotine leagues in their fantasy football options this year. One might even say these troubled times call for the Year of the Guillotine...

Every move the Padres have made since the Soto trade has made me nervous-it all feels like the stakes keep ratcheting up and the window closing further with each salary implication. But however questionable some of his decision-making may be, still glad Preller has the balls to swing for the fences.

I know baseball needs to attract a younger audience, but are we sure making a confused Shohei high five Ludacris’s backup dancers during pregame intros is the right answer? #asg2025
