A potential bailout is not the only federal program up in the air for farmers. It is also unclear if Congress will pass a new farm bill, which expired in 2023 and was extended a third time as part of the legislation to reopen the government, or if regulations on ethanol or sustainable aviation fuel will be changed and stimulate more demand for corn and soybeans. Never has a president withheld essential food assistance during a shutdown, cutting off critical support that ensures children and families don't go hungry. This harm doesn't stop at the kitchen door — it ripples through farms, markets and main streets across rural America. Every dollar in SNAP spending generates about $1.50 in total economic activity. In small towns and farming counties, SNAP benefits circulate through the system, keeping grocery lights on, shelves stocked and family farms afloat. SNAP spending translates directly into farm income through farmers markets that accept SNAP and food hubs and local grocers that buy regional produce. The loss of SNAP income adds to the challenges farmers have already been facing from the fallout of the USDA's cuts to programs that promote local and regional food systems. Farm Aid calls on Congress and the administration to immediately restore SNAP funding and guarantee uninterrupted benefits in any future shutdown.

We're still thinking about the things that made Farm Aid 40 last month so special. Farmers, artists, advocates and music fans come together to raise awareness about the challenges and opportunities farmers face, but they all celebrated together with music, activities and events.
37,000 In person festivalgoers at Huntington Bank Stadium in Minneapolis for Farm Aid 40. 18 Artists on the Farm Aid 40 lineup – including the late addition of Bob Dylan and the surprise appearance of Sierra Ferrell. 7 Minnesota farmers featured on the press event stage that kicked off Farm Aid 40. 472 Volunteers from 2 countries and 28 states made the day run smoothly. They set up, chopped vegetables, helped festivalgoers make compost and put smiles on everyone's faces!

We were very proud to learn this week that Farm Aid 40, which took place last month in Minneapolis, was the first-ever Zero Waste event at Huntington Bank Stadium! That means we reached a 90% diversion rate.
