Here's a beautiful Texas Argiope spider (fam. Araneidae) which I saw every day when I walked my dog until one day she was gone.

Apparently the odd devices are parts of a pipe organ. Wikipedia says that a clarion is "a high-pitched trumpet used in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance" but also "a 4' organ reed stop that produces a high-pitched or clarion-like sound on a pipe organ ..." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarion....

Found this woodcut in a sammelband at the Berlin Staatsbibliothek. No idea what's up, but the dude on the left seems to be hawking a fine vine and the Angel of Truth looks like he fell into a vat of leeches. Or maybe this involves poison ivy. c. 1474-5. LC copy on right has identical coloring.

You're right again! Definitely an "f". See below, from the Newberry. italian.newberry.t-pen.org/www/record.h... I think "fr"is right, but I still don't see the "at", although "fratij" makes sense.

The book is Piccolomini, Della Sfera del Mondo, Venice: Bevilacqua 1561. The famous star atlas (with the stars here printed not woodcut). Here's the title page. I don't think there is any other writing in the book (I will confirm.) Grazie!
