.hack needs to be consumed as a whole, as the story is completely interconnected. Start with .hack//sign anime, then the first 4 .hack games and the four ova that came with it, then the 3 volumes of .hack//twilight bracelet manga, then .hack//roots anime and finish the .hack//gu games.
