Oddity (2024) is a supernatural horror movie with a simple plot (that never slips into cliches) and extremely well-executed tension and scares. It’s creepy and esoteric, with delightful and harrowing patience with its scares.

My new Swarmweaver deck made an absolute MOUNTAIN of bugs! First time playing paper Magic in months and months 🥰

Caveat is a creepy horror movie with a claustrophobic setting that captures the same feeling as a survival horror game. It answers the most pressing elements of its mystery, but leaves the rest up to the audience's imagination after a chilling climax.

Red Rooms (2023) is a horror movie that comments on obsession, true crime, the internet, society, and more. The atmosphere and performances slowly ratchet the tension to unbearable levels. A bleak, multi-faceted, and riveting movie that defies easy answers and begs thought-provoking questions.

28 Years Later (2025) is half zombie horror blockbuster and half coming-of-age Film. It has some big ideas that mostly work, but it's also full of dreamlike whimsy that just didn’t land for me. I was entertained but found it head-scratching & often hollow or silly when it was trying to be profound.

28 Weeks Later (2007) is a zombie movie that leans much more into over-the-top action sequences and big explosions than the powerful themes of its predecessor. Nevertheless, it’s an exciting movie that’s well-made with a cast jam-packed with big name actors. Good old-fashioned blockbuster fun!

28 Days Later (2002) is a zombie movie that explores themes around humanity, society, and survival. It has nice moments of suspense and the characters are crafted so precisely and so well (in even such a short time) that it allows for a surprisingly thoughtful examination of its ideas.

Bring Her Back (2025) is an atmospheric supernatural horror movie that grabbed me quickly and held me ruthlessly captive. The filming style and acting is spectacular; I was totally enthralled while the awful horrors of its eerie and occult story unfolded.

Invasive (2024) is a cat-and-mouse style reverse-home invasion movie with a plot structure and story that will be familiar to horror fans. However, don’t let that dissuade you: Invasive has incredible pacing, protagonists with pathos, and an overall very modern feel that I enjoyed immensely!

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000) is an animated science fantasy horror movie that is packed to the brim with high-octane action and visually stunning tableaus in a pulpy, enticing post-apocalyptic setting.

Last Night in Soho (2021) is a flashy supernatural horror movie that hardcore genre fans will find somewhat predictable, but it is exciting and stylish. The themes on belonging and nostalgia are a little shallow, but the performances and fantastic and there are some really cool visuals.

Dead Talents Society (2024) is a vivacious and refreshing horror-comedy. What starts as comedic worldbuilding about the afterlife develops into a grounded examination of family, celebrity, capitalism, and achievement. I highly recommend checking it out while it's on Netflix!

The Clown in a Cornfield movie didn't really hit for me, so instead of reviewing it I HIGHLY recommend you go pick up the novel! It's by Adam Cesare and is a love letter to slashers that does its own thing w/ a great cast of modern characters. I can't wait to get my hands on the sequel!

1408 (2007) is a psychological horror movie about a writer being tormented by an evil hotel room. It’s a dramatic, entertaining, and VERY Stephen King-y flick that sneaks in some pretty good scares and genuinely creepy moments among its bigger, more emotional themes.

Sinners (2025) is a supernatural action horror movie set in the 1930s American South and packed with gorgeous visuals, fantastic dialogue, and great characters. It is spectacular entertainment from top to bottom and explores themes on belonging, race, music, and more. This was fucking CINEMA!

The Church (1989) is a supernatural horror movie that has a few great ideas and fantastical visuals, but they are buried in a muddy narrative. I really wanted to like this for the physical effects alone, but it had absolutely no stakes and barely any story.

WOW. Guess Arena really wants me to play Jeskai??? Did anybody’s else’s free packs do this or was I just hitting the crazy coincidence button?? #TarkirDragonstorm

The Stylist (2020) is a killer POV movie (like Maniac or Peeping Tom). It has pacing issues common with features derived from shorts, but it successfully develops an uneasy tone using a combination of gruesome violence and social discomfort to explore themes of belonging, identity, and loneliness.

Cuckoo (2024) is a stylish supernatural horror movie about the unsettling goings-on at a remote German mountain resort. Although the pacing stumbles a bit, the movie takes huge, weird swings that are fresh and interesting!

Where the Devil Roams (2023) is a supernatural horror movie set in Depression-era America. Although it is beautifully made for its budget and the creative team shows serious artistic chops, the story meanders quite a bit and I struggled to make much thematic sense of its bits and pieces.

I brewed up a (pretty bad) Mindskinner deck in Arena. It’s SO COOL, but just not very strong. I’m going to try dropping some of the tempo stuff for high-power fliers and evasive creatures!

Anybody have card recs for this one (beyond the obvious mill stuff)?

The Ruins (2008) is a horror movie that uses the structure of a single-location slasher movie and the tropes of a creature feature to produce a lean and mean movie that is perfect for a gross and gory movie night!
March 18, 2025 at 4:22 PM
Never Hike Alone (2017) is a Friday the 13th fan movie that is a strong showing and pretty impressive for a crowd-funded independent project. It’s super short, fast-paced, and full of loving homage to the original franchise that I love so much! 7/10

Slugs (1988) is an absolutely ridiculous Piranhas-style creature feature that makes for a fun and absolutely ludicrous movie night. Just turn off your brain and watch as the horniest small town in middle America are devoured by mutant slugs.

CW movie poster including blood!
