"Chuuya, that's no way to talk to your superior," Dazai chided him with a smirk, and Chuuya's scowl deepened.

It wasn't very long afterwards that Aiichiro decided that Ainosuke needed to earn his keep, to repay everything that he had invested—now wasted—in the boy's future. If Ainosuke hadn't been broken before his "vocational training," then he certainly was afterward.

It had sat silent for more than a decade after all the minerals had been extracted from it, and there had been some discussions about redeveloping it into… something else. The scope of such a project had proved intimidating, though, especially as the numerous tunnels under the surface made for a weak foundation, so no concrete proposal had yet emerged—but he didn't understand why Ainosuke wanted to come here.

The wet red eye that peered out at him from under the slender limb was wide with fear… but he watched as its expression slowly changed to curiosity and then wonder as it lowered its arm.
