I read the linked piece the other day (a beautiful piece, I recommend it by the way), and just now got to the bit in Everything Will Swallow You about Penny’s bag from her friend in Oz. Thought I was time travelling for a sec before I clicked it’s Tom’s Mum’s bag from the shorter piece! Loved that!

And the headline and article text label the person as an illegal alien, unquestioningly parroting the agency’s rhetoric. When I was at university in the 1990s one of the first things I was taught was not to accept my sources uncritically. Reporters today would do well to remember their education.
