Investigative journalism to expose the truth of FanimeCon from publicly available data.
BUT there are things you can try. (Not Legal Advice) You can try and report to the California Office of Attorney General and/or contact the bay area local news station investigative team about your issue and if there are enough complaints, they may open up an investigation.

But now that the event is over and (still yet) failed to address the failed process requested refunds/deferrals from the 2020 convention, unfortunately you are unlikely able to submit a chargeback...

As for some people saying if FanimeCon does nothing to address the SH/SA claims to go to the cops, (unfortunately,) I don’t think that may help (Source: www.sfgate.com/bayarea/arti...)
Local cop masturbated in front of family during violence call, DA says
The officer is now on administrative leave.

The issues with the Fanime’s board we found in discovery plus the way they communicate (as seen in the forms) demonstrates the mentality of a high school club & while it started as a small social club, it has never grown out of that mentality to a responsible convention
May 30, 2024 at 11:28 PM
Fanime’s board has a known history of unprofessionalism to borderline hostility, for example when we were were researching the board, we have found some examples
May 30, 2024 at 11:25 PM
And how does it failed its dereliction of duty; the people who run the event are augmented on a different level than the people they serve and don’t communicate with them; or in other words, the “by fans” (board) are not the same people as the “for fans” (attendee)

Also in documentation of the change in CFO with CA Secretary Of State, FanimeCon’s secretary was referenced as an officer in the change, that same secretary publicly exposed PII information of its staff from FanimeCon 2012-2019 on GitHub.

The fact that they replaced its (then) CFO with a new CFO in August 2022 without disclosing a reason to its staff other than the board & was only made public by people (like FanimeLeaks) discovering court dockets about the embezzlement in April 2024 brought distrust.
May 30, 2024 at 3:16 AM
The fact that no one other than Fanime’s board directly (other than speculation) knew about the fraud for more than 1 (to 2) years with its (then) CFO till we made it public gives examples how it failed its dereliction of duty engrained in its motto: For fans, by fans
May 30, 2024 at 3:14 AM
The boards of Fanime helped create this condition for embezzlement through systematic levels of deception, not refunding attendee badges for 2020 event, not overseeing its budget, failing to have a outside audit (reason for it has a delinquent tax status in CA)
May 30, 2024 at 3:14 AM
Now for the issue with fraud with its CFO, while the CEO and FanimeCon's Board will claim that they are not responsible for the actions of its CFO actions, they are (most likely) "equally responsible for the people they hired" (quoting the video I referenced).
While investigating the FanimeCon’s practices from publicly accessible data, another company has came under fire for hostile workplace, bad leadership, mismanaged funds, retaliation, delayed responses and that company is EK (video explaining the situation youtu.be/8A7cykj0pCg)

A lot of the issues FanimeCon is facing has a lot of similarities with another company is facing (in both the relevance of the timing and the issues).

Now after we demonstrated the facts and evidence of these discoveries, we are now tailoring to our editorial analysis.
May 28, 2024 at 11:28 PM
Most of the time, they don’t even give estimated numbers to report, citing they “don't even have the numbers because its NOT DEFINED”. Through it is typically calculated by total badgeholders (or if you want to be fancy, define it all out: attendees, staff, vendor, etc)
May 27, 2024 at 10:52 PM
Even through since then they have transitioned from old fashioned manual transaction collection to a completely computerized transaction (even for on-site registration, as shown in the data), they still only provide estimated numbers…. At best…. for only 2/10 FanimeCon(s)
May 27, 2024 at 10:51 PM
Now, going back on figuring out why we still only get (though quite inflated as we demonstrated) estimated numbers in attendance, we found this response from the Director of the FanimeCon back in 2011 with the words “YOUR MOM !”….. Your mom indeed… -_-

Enclosed is a redacted screenshot of FanimeCon staff list from the publicly shared document, with sensitive data obscured. We hid random sections of each row in the data to provide evidence of its presence but restrict what details can be taken from the image to protect individuals.
May 27, 2024 at 2:49 AM
It looks like the GitHub profile to the repos we uncovered has changed its username in the past 36 hours. While we know its new username, we will not be sharing that information to the public unless more data is leaked concerning FanimeCon.
May 27, 2024 at 2:40 AM
Having discovered and summarized the gross negligence with which Fanime board handles sensitive information, would you be inclined to staff or even attend an event where their staff's personal data is treated with such disregard? #FailedByFanime
May 25, 2024 at 11:30 PM
Given how much information was publicly accessible for anyone to see, it could be claimed a possible CCPA (California version of GDPR) infringement. Though the rules are not really enforced for non-profits (....yeah about their non-profit 501(c)(3) status.... Delinquent since 2019).
May 25, 2024 at 11:30 PM
Or the simplest approach to unmasking the data: Scanning public social media posts of the user that contains their FanimeCon staff badge and reference the Staff ID number printed on the badge itself and correlating the information with badge IDs in the leaked data.
May 24, 2024 at 11:31 PM
Another approach to unmasking data: Using a combination of social and data engineering techniques, identifying individuals who have changed departments over the years at FanimeCon, referencing in the guidebook, and correlating this information with badge IDs in the leaked data.
May 24, 2024 at 11:31 PM
One way in which data can be de-masked is by pinpointing individuals within solo department team based on the guidebooks FanimeCon distributes. These names can then be cross-referenced with leaked data CSV to uncover identities (Similar with small departments with a little work)
