Most of these types of failed features come down to one of two things, from what I've seen:

* Overly ambitious feature bloat
Or
* The money people demanded it

I will be interested if we ever get the story with what happened there. Was it more fleshed out, but didn't work and had to be stripped down? Was it scope creep that they had to skip to finish on time?

Hopefully someone will find a hack to do the one thing you do there fast so you can ignore it.
