There's something wrong here. Either the families I know in Italy lie or some information is missing. As far as I know, it is true that public nurseries are cheap, but they are always full and people with average income can't afford private nurseries, so most families rely on grandparents.

Especially if you happen to lose. I worked in the gambling industry for years, that's how it works. When you win, you get some satisfaction. When you lose, you tell yourself: "Next time it will work". Of course, winning doesn't guarantee you walk away, but then who really ever wins at these things?
