I’m a freelance writer who has kind of done it all: Bicycle Messenger, Alaska Salmon Fisher, Commercial Diver, Pro Cycling Team Mechanic, even a momentary lapse as a Stock Broker.
I’m also a late-in-life college graduate who now tells stories.

In the wake of her sinking, and with the help of Gordon Lightfoot to make her name legendary, regulations became more strict, and company culture began to place staff at least equal in value to the bottom line.
I just thought it was worth a mention.

At the risk of sounding sappy, at roughly this exact moment, fifty years ago, the Edmund Fitzgerald slipped beneath the turbulent, storm-churned waters of Lake Superior just a few miles short of Whitefish Point. Her’s was the last major Great Lakes shipping catastrophe.

In between cycling gigs, I sprinkled in some interesting vocations. The most interesting to me was commercial diving. Sadly, this all occurred before the ubiquity of iPhones, so I only have two pictures of me on the job — both taken with flip-phones.☹️
One is in the Gulf. The other is over a dam.

“Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.”
I often use this Godfather 3 quote to describe my career in pro cycling.
It began as part time and regional in 1985 with Killian’s and continued with other teams (Crest & Coors Light) thru 89. Then again from 94-99, 2011-17, and 2023-24.

I was a professional cyclist for a brief period in the early 90s. Here I am with the legendary Leo Seferlis at DuPont Circle in DC. Leo passed in 2009, and the world dimmed a little. He was the epitome of the cool Renaissance man and was essential in my becoming a successful bicycle messenger.

I raced bicycles from high school thru my mid-20s. By “raced” I mean I owned a bicycle designed for such purposes and spent way too much money in hopes to overcome my complete lack of athleticism.
Here I am playing around the Dick Lane Velodrome in ATL, sporting my North Atlanta Road Club jersey.
