Fun trick with After Effects beta: as you can now transform textures on 3D models, you can do cool stuff like UV offset animation for facial expressions and lip sync.
If you want to give it a try, this character is free from Mixamo and has eyes, brows and mouth separately controllable.

A recent addition to After Effects beta: clean up your 3D giz-mess by adjusting all your 3D layers with a single gizmo. Makes 3D interaction a lot faster, too!

🆕 Super excited about a feature that just went live in After Effects beta: Quick Offset. Stagger and retime layers and keyframes just by dragging!

If you're looking to make your own version of the Eurovision heart-shaped halftone effect in After Effects, Card Dance or Particle Playground are the way to go. The former renders faster, the latter is quicker to set up. Both can give you some really fun results! (This clip is Card Dance.)

One of my favorite features of AE 3D is the "Shadow Color" option. Choosing a dark color from the scene you're compositing into can make a huge difference in how realistic your shadows look. Real-world shadows are rarely true black! Here's a photo I took last night that's an extreme example:

Nice easy 3D lighting effect in AE: make an RGB spot light rig! Position 100% red, green and blue lights side by side so they mostly-but-not-fully overlap to form a white spot light. Creates a chromatic aberration-like feel that really adds character vs a plain white spot.

Lately I've been experimenting with toon shading effects for 3D models in After Effects. All of these styles start with the Cartoon effect with different things stacked on top.

Here's a good example of when you might want to mess with 3D compositing options in After Effects. The text in the middle is a 3D precomp with accepts lights/shadows turned off so it's not affected by the scene lighting.

Same camera track from the other shot, now lit by a solid with a VR Color Gradients effect with its points tied to the new positional nulls (also in beta) and made 3D.
