The problem is that if you walk away (or resign), you immediately lose your ability to make change. By staying in place, they can help guide and protect their people. Many of them will resign if they have to (e.g. over an illegal order), but will stay until then.

That hasn't been my experience, but I'm not in Utah and won't deny your observations. Here we have the Raging Piedmont Grannies (they're a hoot!) and the folks I've met were ones who were active in the 70s to try to get the ERA passed. I've been inspired by them.

Flip side - the protests I've attended have been largely organized and heavily attended by... boomers. It's an age group that remembers and effectively protested Vietnam. I think it's important to recognize that many of them are actively protesting.
