"The volte-face increasingly looks like the last act of a piece of political theatre that allowed UEFA’s senior leadership to signal its support for the people of Gaza, while avoiding taking any action to help them."

Read the letters to the sports bodies at fairsq.org/aramco-letters
October 2, 2025 at 7:25 AM
Last year 135 professional football players – with a combined 2,700 international caps – called on FIFA to drop Aramco as a partner.
October 2, 2025 at 7:25 AM
Ultimately this is about providing a platform for a company committed to expandin crude oil production and resisting the commitment to transition away from fossil fuels that was agreed at COP28.
October 2, 2025 at 7:25 AM
Promoting Aramco also means promoting the Saudi Arabian state.
October 2, 2025 at 7:25 AM
Football, cricket and motor racing authorities have completely ignored warnings from UN experts about Aramco's impact on the planet and humans.
October 2, 2025 at 7:25 AM
But they are taking $millions to promote Aramco, the world's biggest oil company which has a history of lobbying to delay climate action.
October 2, 2025 at 7:25 AM
These sports bodies claim to be committed to "sustainability" and action on the climate crisis.
October 2, 2025 at 7:25 AM
Six of the world’s biggest sports organisations, including FIFA, the International Cricket Council & Formula 1, are being challenged to justify their sponsorship deals with state-owned Saudi Aramco. These partnerships may place them in breach of international human rights standards.

FairSquare coordinated the letter. Our co-director @ncgeehan.bsky.social accused FIFA of "kicking the can down the road on this issue for 12 years despite clear evidence of a flagrant and very serious violation of its statutes." fairsq.org/letter-fifa-...

FIFA said in May that the governance committee apparently needed "expert reporting including on topics of territoriality", following a Palestinian Football Association complaint against the Israel Football Association. In their letter the experts provide "unassailable facts" on this topic.

Leading legal experts and scholars have today written to FIFA’s Governance Audit and Compliance Committee (GAAC), in relation to the committee’s examination of a complaint relating to the holding of matches in Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. fairsq.org/letter-fifa-...

As Palestinian FA vice president Susan Shalabi told the FIFA President: “our issue, sadly, again, is stuck in a highly politicized, bureaucratic holding pattern, not unlike the suffering of our people. Visible, undeniable, but sadly ignored.”

The deaths of migrant workers in Saudi Arabia has profound and damaging impacts on their families, who struggle for basic information about their relatives' deaths from employers. Compensation is almost impossible, leaving families with unpaid debt and financial hardship.

A new proposal for a European Sports Act, by @janzglinski.bsky.social and others, deserves strong support. The evidence in favour of imposing regulation on dysfunctional sport bodies like FIFA is overwhelming. This is what that could look like in practice. fairsq.org/new-proposal...

"The whole house will be shocked to learn the worrying news that Laila Soueif was admitted to St Thomas Hospital last night. Can the Foreign Secretary update us on whether the PM has now spoken to the Egyptian president to secure the release of Alaa?"

FairSquare is one of 25 organisations calling on the UK to take action on Egypt at the Human Rights Council.

The groups have urged David Lammy to build on his strong stand in January, when UK called for the release of Alaa Abd el-Fattah & all held for exercising the right to freedom of expression.

Important piece by @usmanjawed.bsky.social for @thewire.in - "the countries that provide the labour to the Gulf states... must be the ones that press for their protection– we cannot and should not rely on western NGOs and the international media to protect Indian workers."

Some of the FairSquare team with Laila Soueif and Peter Greste this morning outside 10 Downing St, calling on Keir Starmer to take action to Free Alaa.

FairSquare has been working with Alaa's family and @freealaa.bsky.social since 2022, and will continue to do so until he is free.
