Some do build mounds but others don't. If you tell me the location I can maybe identify this species.

Another way to tell is that in Crematogaster, the gaster is connected to the mesosoma by a flattened, elongated petiole and a post-petiole. However, Colobopsis always has only one petiole and no post-petiole.

I'm guessing that would be true for most cases however not a general rule. For example some Crematogaster species lack spines. A good way to tell is that Crematogaster has a distinctive "heart shaped" gaster.
