Here to bring academics a daily dose of inspiration and reflection through tarot. I am a professor of sociology and use tarot in my daily personal and work life.
Death to what holds you back! Bury the bad habits or the inability to believe in yourself- death to the limiting factors that you've let dictate your life. #tarot

The #8ofPentacles card suggests it takes many hours of focused practice to master a skill, such as academic writing. Consider your writing as practice and not as something you should automatically know how to do. #tarot

The #SunTarot has risen from the deck again! Joy and clarity to all of you as we embark upon the final weeks of the semester here in the southern states. #tarot

#9OfSwords has all the feels today. My spouse has been in & out of the hospital for weeks, we don't know what's wrong. I'm thankful for a flexible job that allows me to be gone from work when needed. This card reflects negative thoughts, but also it's a message to reach out for help. #tarot

REST. How are you going to get some rest this weekend? I am avoiding email, watching football, knitting, and reading. We have to learn how to be regularly & spectacularly unproductive. See the #4OfSwords card and my cat sleeping for inspo. #tarot

It's the Working Mom archetype, #QueenOfPentacles, taking care of her material world & those she loves. I know self-care is nearly a cliche, but this Queen reminds you to take care of yourself: Carve out some solitude, enjoy the sunshine through the trees, plan out your week, read a book #tarot

#KingOfBows from #WildWoodTarot. I dislike this card because *snakes* but here we go: masculine energy surrounding thoughts, words, & determination. Step into your power. It's taken me awhile to be assertive & feel more powerful. Believe in yourself like an average white male colleague does! #tarot

#2OfWands is limbo energy when you're presented with an opportunity: Want to guest lecture/collaborate on an article/present a workshop on your research? If the answer isn't a joyous YES, say no. If the opportunity is a year from now, but you wouldn't do it tomorrow... say No. #tarot

Clear mental processes and decisiveness are the energies from today's #5ofBows in the #WildWoodTarot deck. My brain fog has been extremely problematic lately. I am hoping that this card can help me think about why it's been this way. #tarot

The #KnightOfWands is all action & movement- pursuing a shiny new idea. But knights don't always have staying power, so take care when running off with some great new project until you have given it some thought: what about your current projects, do you have the time, do you have the support? #tarot

In case you didn't know, work will never love you back. It won't! That's the message I'm hearing from the #PageOfCups today. Love your research, your students, your deep thinking.... don't love the institution. #tarot

It's the #Balance tarot (or #Temperance) card today. Reminding you to take time for breaks: In nature, in front of the tv, reading novels. A few years ago I left an exhausting & toxic department & decided that- no matter what - I would not work evenings or weekends. It feels really good #tarot

Pulled #TheMoonOnWater from the #WildWoodTarot deck. Haunting and introspective card! I'm working on a paper about embodied fieldwork- what are your bodily reactions to fieldwork? How are your emotions and spirit affected by those you interact with in the field? These are important questions! #tarot

Hey there, it's #TheSun card again! It's meaningful to draw a big card like this in a short amount of time. I took it literally today - walked around campus for 30 minutes with no phone, no distraction. Just enjoying the sunshine. Get out of your office when you can! #tarot

#TheJourney is the Death card for #WildwoodTarot. I think this card is particularly pretty. What are you clinging to that needs to be left behind? What bridges need to be burned? I'm thinking death to the hustle & grind. Death to the comparison game. Death to the word "should."

Drew the #5ofWands. Fives are chaotic energy and this card suggests disharmony within a group of people. I am not currently working with a disharmonous group, so it could be this struggle is within me. Sounds about right for me today. #tarot

#TheHierophant is the teacher archetype. This #tarot card symbolizes the passing down of wisdom. When I draw this one, I think of my teaching vocation as sacred and special.

#7ofPentacles Love this card! You are doing so well, but don't forget to pause and reflect on your progress so far. My pause/reflection took place today on my oversized whiteboard. See if anything needs refining or adjusting before moving on. #tarot

#5ofCups. Any emotional pain going on right now? Acknowledge it and "be good to yourself" as Journey said. It's the halfway point of the semester, with no fall break in sight. I have a colleague who builds her own fall break into the semester. She's taking care of herself! #tarot

#8ofPentacles : DO THE WORK. Sometimes it's so boring, but tedious tasks will sharpen your skills and move projects along. Today I finished details on a research poster, scheduled meetings with co-authors, and drafted a kind of boring abstract. Tedious tasks are also a good fit for low energy days!

Drew #TheSun on a day when our new faculty member got trolled on FB by a notorious "mom" group, all because she teaches & researches biracial/intersectional identities. Trying to find the joy, as pictured in this bright & happy #tarotcard, is tough sometimes in this sh$tty political environment.

I love #TheHermit. I like to be on my own, reflect, recharge, and breathe. As academics we are often surrounded by people: Students! Colleagues! Committees! Be sure and carve out some time for being alone, it's important for body and soul. #tarot
September 25, 2025 at 8:30 PM
#TheChariot. Why isn't the chariot moving? Where are the reins? You need a strong idea of where you're going & why. Your determination will be enough to steer you on a course once you settle on where/why. I felt pulled in many different directions today without focus. I stopped, breathed, focused.

The #Magician! This card suggests the beginning of a significant new journey. Make sure your plan aligns with your values & ideals. Then- do it! You have everything you need to begin, don't wait for the "perfect" time, fake it til you make it! #tarot

Another hard one, #5ofCups. Go ahead and mourn for what you've lost, but remember, there are 2 cups still behind you. I am mourning for those in academic positions who have lost their jobs in this current political climate. When can we return to "normal?" #tarot
