Reading the Lonely Hearts classifieds in the alt-weeklies was really, really entertaining. Main reason for browsing the weeklies was for the chuckles from an oddball or really witty ad.

Based on which cons I’ve seen more trans folks in, either hyper-crunchy PF2e campaigns or narrative-first games that make PbtA look like RoleMaster.

Or possibly sought the agony of the cross to try to blot said Hentai out of his mind.

I think we’ve all experienced inadvertently finding out Rule 34 applied to something sufficiently disturbing, that we can sympathize if that indeed was Jesus’s motivation.

With him, though, it’s Chaosium’s RPG that really helped. None of the film adaptations have been great.

Like, the first published campaign setting was Empire of the Petal Throne/Telumel, which is a fascinating setting drawing on South Asian and Mesoamerican cultures.
(Devised by MAR Barker, who far from being PC, had political views so odious they weren’t fully revealed until long after his death.)

On Kristol and permanent revolution - his dad Irving Kristol was a former Trotskyist and made friends with Irving Howe (later DSOC and DSA founder) at CCNY when they were being bullied by tankies.

Never encountered Serdar. But I remember “Uncle” Al Schwartz on the sci. forums would get absolutely livid with Archimedes P.

Think Uncle Al was involved in developing synthetic diamonds. He posted a few hints on the sci. forums.

<plonk> - ah, memories of USENET killfiles. A
USENET client in the late ‘90s with a filter was a better user experience than anything on social media now,
IMHO.

I miss when Archimedes Plutonium was the most vexing thing I might encounter on the internet, though.

Yep. And I can’t see a “fast follower” strategy that works for the U.S. to replicate it. It’s not some cool design or innovation.

It’s boring systems and process optimization grinding down costs over years.

Was once on a project where I realized the Chinese engineers we were working with could build the second generation of their pilot plant faster than I could get a report about their first generation plant through our publication review process.

It’s not the rare earth ores - it’s the scale, and the fact that the Chinese engineers have had decades to come down the experience curve on costs.

Chinese process engineers are really, really good. And they build a lot of plants, so they learn a lot.

Injecting not-FDA approved peptide drugs from China is the big fashion among S.F. techbros now, and it will go badly at some stage. Albeit to not the most sympathetic demographic.

What the fuck.

Congratulations for your achievement, and also for having the resolve and gumption to not let let these gobshites diminish it.

Having worked with a few HBS alumni, I will say one of my life goals is never to work with one again.

Stanford, Yale, MIT etc. B-school alumni are fine. But HBS grads have a unique ability to fuck up royally and fail upwards leaving former colleagues to pick up the wreckage.

Vaesen would be a good one - but the published materials tend to be in Protestant countries.

Yes! Folks who think Aragorn is the hero of the Lord of the Rings, rather than Sam and Frodo. Or that the most important thing Gandalf does is kill the Balrog, rather than chewing out Frodo when he says that Bilbo should have killed Gollum. So later Frodo spares Gollum, and this saves Middle-Earth.

Has nobody made a platner fasciitis pun yet?

The user experience from a decent USENET client with filters and killfile from 1996 now would beat 95% of current social media apps.

The SWP can’t have outdone Gerry Healy and the WRP in the harassment front.

During the poll tax days, UK anarchists you could trust to not hijack meetings or marches and f**k things up so they could get recruits. Trots you couldn’t trust not to derail things just to get more newspaper sellers.

Like, the GOP has won the popular vote only twice since the fall of the Berlin Wall. They’re wielded power using anti-democratic means.

Shame the plan to merge it with UC Santa Cruz died at the CA State Legislature.

The WPA slave testimonies are well worth reading (remembering that as some of the interviewers were white, the ex-slaves may have censored themselves).
