Extras:
Protest Gear image from Hong Kong in the Summer of 2019. Yellow construction hat to protect against rubber bullets, tear gas, and bricks. Broad face cover, to counter facial recognition software. Backpack for snacks, water, laser pens to shine in officer’s eyes. Elbow and knee pads for falling, crawling, and scuffing. Loose change, for subway and to avoid being tracked. Goggles for flying debris. Gas mask and Lycra skin covers for tear gas. Black clothes, harder to trace back to you. Umbrella to protect against tear gas and pepper spray. Heat resistant gloves to throw hot tear gas cans back at police. Undercover cop signs: backwards hat, gold chain to hide radio communication. Handcuffs/zip ties in back pocket. Pants and shoes are tactical grade. Blue line bracelet and wire from radio. Armband to hide affiliation. Police vest hidden under clothes. Doing surveillance and looking past where he’s standing. If your cellphone is on and unsecured, your location can be tracked and your unencrypted communications such as SMS, may be intercepted. Additionally, police may retrieve your messages and the content on your phone, or later by warrant. If you have access to a separate phone, whether it’s a “burner” phone, an old smart phone that you can reset, or an old fashioned camera, you could choose to bring these devices instead of a regularly used phone. DO NOT turn your burner phone on at your home as it can ping a cell towers where you are and where it last was. It’s our right to know how to protest and to act upon protesting. (This image was meant to be shared earlier but it’s too late for me to move it, I’m sorry about that 🥲) An Oligarchy is a small group of people having control of a country, organizations or institution. It is possible for it to be with multiple things, such as a Totalitarian Oligarchy. Their goal is for us to be overwhelmed, to ignore/avoid the growing information, and to feel helpless. Our goal is to learn and focus on what we can do instead of what we can’t. As a reminder, I did share in the beginning that what routes are available can change for any reason. To continue with what you can be, a Church goer: Historically, churches/synagogues/mosques/temples have been safe-ish to gather in large groups to organize. Anyone familiar with the history of Black churches or churches under facism, know there is potential for great food but also a risk of the church being burned, raided, bombed, or leaders being rounded up. Whether you are an atheist or a theist, consider finding a community that can gather and organize in large groups and become a regular contributing member. As of January 22, 2025, I.C.E. Is legally allowed to raid churches, hospitals, and schools under undocumented immigrant suspicion. They need a signed judge issued warrant. You are legally allowed to demand and look at it. Rest: rest can be resistance. From what I understand, it is about self care for the long haul. For more information, I recommend reading “rest is resistance” by Tricia Hersey. Creating: Paint, write, graffiti, design, music, videos, comedy, etc. if you are a creative person, use it to spread awareness, help raise funds, etc. Quiet Subversive: if you’re calling is hiding people, driving women to clinics, mailing birth control, or any illegal morally good activity, be paranoid. Social media is not your friend. Social media apps can and will sell you out. You have to assume your life, the lives of your friends and family, and the lives of the ones you are helping are in mortal danger. As soon as you share, “I’d hide Anne in my attic” you are no longer safe and not useful for this work. Financial Supoorter: Every dollar has the potential to do good. If you are able to put money towards a small business, especially if they are run by marginalized persons or groups, please do. The billionaires won’t be hurt and it won’t stop them from aligning with facists but it will put the money into the hands of those needing to escape, needing aid, or in the hands of the above mentioned registers. Marcher: Marches can be used for paying attention to which groups are attending. Any group showing up with a banner is putting a giant target on themselves and they are going to need support. Volunteering with or sending money helps them to continue showing up. The focus of the March is disruption which can potentially lead to becoming a target. Burner phones can be traced to you if you turn it on in your home. Don’t share faces. Don’t stick out. Bring water and medical supplies. Be prepared to be pepper sprayed, smoke bombed, hit by a baton, harassed if someone shares an image of your face online, and arrested/imprisoned.

Note: These suggestions are nothing new and may have to adapt to any environmental, governmental, and social changes Distributor: this can be done by printing info or providing online links. For groups and organization that can take the heat, such as Planned Parenthood, sharing and boosting their posts can be helpful. If your calling is to print up red cards or make pamphlets, then anywhere you place this info is going to be targeted for destruction of materials. Regularly drop off into and find new ways to get the word out. For smaller groups that need to stay somewhat obscure, be selective about sharing info. Educator: The come in many forms, building, first aid, critical thinking, self defense, fact checking, science, map reading, psychology, etc. anything that can help the quiet subversive, the information distributor, the marcher, etc. be more effective; keep up the good work of long threads and videos. If you are not an expert, share media and videos from credible experts. Volunteer: soup kitchens, shelters, anywhere and everywhere people or animals are in need. Any and all good works towards our neighbors is resistance.

Defeated, Yellow slumps. Hands covering their face, tears falling down their arms. “But how can I work in this! Knowing that it can all just — FLIP! At any minute, all I worked for will just… not matter.” Yellow scarf sits up, leaning over and holding themselves. They wipe their own tears with a hand, looking away from blue. In a quieter tone they add, “Like I don’t matter… all because some stupid numbers mattered more.” Blue puts a hand on yellow’s shoulder. “I understand. I’m also scared and unsure what the future holds. And what I am sure about,” Blue emphasizes. “Terrifies me.” Blue pulls yellow to cry into the curve of their shoulder and neck. Softly, Blue says, “But at least we’re in this together.” Tears are in Blue’s eyes, but in their voice is a tired determination, a small comfort to Yellow.
