3/3 🌎 The Barcelona Convention unites all 21 Mediterranean countries. The framework for cooperation exists.

What's missing? Political will. The fossil fuel era must end. Regional action must begin. Science gave us the roadmap. Policy must act.

2/3 Marine life under severe threat.🐟

What we're losing:

🔹 Corals are already bleaching
🔹 Species are migrating north.
🔹 Food chains are collapsing.

But there's still hope. Staying within 2°C is possible - if countries cut emissions 6% annually from 2030.

🚨 The #Mediterranean is running out of time. New study from OceanCare the Basque Center for Climate Change (BC3) shows the region's carbon budget will be exhausted by 2035 at current emission rates. The region already passed 1.5°C warming.

3/3 We have to remain as much as possible below the 2°C threshold, as defined in the Paris Agreement. And this is still achievable - if #Mediterranean countries reduce emissions by ~6% annually starting in 2030, as shown in our and BC3s latest report.

2/3 The Mediterranean's geography makes it uniquely vulnerable. As a semi-enclosed sea with limited connection to the Atlantic, it can't shed heat the way the open ocean can. Warming from surrounding land masses intensifies the effect. The region heats faster than almost anywhere else on Earth. 🔥

Why is the Mediterranean a climate hotspot? 🌡️

The numbers:
🔹Carbon budget of the Region exhausted by 2035 at current emission levels ⚠️
🔹Region Warming 20% faster than the global average
🔹Sea Surface Temperature: +1.5°C in just 40 years.
