Please follow @asa-ipm.bsky.social, the new account of the Inequality, Poverty, and Mobility section of

So happy that @tagesspiegel.de used this as a pull quote from a recent talk I gave at @boeckler-stiftung.bsky.social

Here is my translation:

Poor guy and rich guy
looked each other in the eye,
the poor guy made his pitch:
If I wasn’t poor, you wouldn’t be rich.

It finally happened!

Who said that "invitation" emails from predatory publishers can't bring joy?

Luis Flores is one of the most innovative and unafraid scholars I have had the pleasure to see grow.

His work is at the intersection of stratification research and economic sociology and you should absolutely check it out: www.luisflores.online

So proud to have been along for a bit of the ride!

Thanks! The accompanying vizualization of the of B/W gap in intergenerational wealth mobility is here: doi.org/10.1177/2378...

B/W gaps in multigenerational wealth transmission are even more staggering (see below). Reminds me I should upload the SocForces Online Appendix somewhere more accessible!

- Lutalo Sanifo (Jefferson East Inc, www.jeffersoneast.org/our-neighbor...)

- Russel Baltimore (City of Detroit)

- Margi Dewar (University of Michigan)

The project involved talented grad students from architecture (Torri Smith, Tessa Broek, Minhui Li, Jordan Zauel) and sociology (Jasmin Simington, Asher Dvir-Djerassi, Sofia Hiltner).

E.g., Tessa "built" this real estate monstrosity:

To enable communities to reclaim power, proposals abound:

- Restrict predatory real estate speculation
- Make property taxes progressive
- Update zoning ordinances for mixed-use dwellings
- Support community land trusts / cooperatives
- Introduce universal basic income & reparations

Just one example of the vast dispossession of Black households in the US (watch the video for more!):

Since 2000 more than 1 in 3 properties in Detroit have gone into tax foreclosure, incl. because of inflated tax assessments.

(h/t to Jasmin Simington for gathering the data)!
