Seeing the distinction between art and design, in my opinion, helps you make better career decisions.

You spend more of your time learning about - and immersing yourself in - things that strengthen your skills. You look for opportunities that align with your direction.

Design teaches you processes.

It makes you look for compositions and roadmaps in everything you see. You learn to make cues that guide the audience toward the message. You often go with the flow; not against it.

With art, you learn to let go of your ego and put your darkest thoughts out in the open. You may destroy your reputation as a "normal" person in the process of building your reputation as an artist. You break the rules to see, and to show others, different perspectives: "Do you see what I see?"
