I would say the novel pushes back against the sort of hegemonic narrative implied by the liberal world order that good and evil exist in the world but in isolation. I think bolaño is trying to depict how these things intermingle: convenience, corruption, passivity, numbness and compartmentalization

the novel is 900 pages and extremely dense with a wide variety of topics, but if I had to characterize the major throughline or main point of interest I would say it is “coexistence with evil” and all the implications and contradictions therein
