Why I don’t teach middle school, as told by two messages from my kid’s band director.

To kick off Women’s History Month, I’ll speak about Flora Carr’s The Tower tonight. It’s resilient women who suffer atrocities, and I’ve got things to say about that!

Of course my daughter is home sick. Here is a peek at my practice run, with a small child in a fairy costume doing acrobatics.

One thing we can do right now — and those of us trained as researchers or journalists are especially equipped to do it — is to FACT CHECK what we read on social media. Don’t assume. Find the source. Remind others to do the same.

A century ago, an older version of the Shakespeare Association of America had a bulletin, and in it, scholars sometimes published theater history and criticism IN VERSE. What do you say, @saaupdates.bsky.social? For next year’s program? 😆

Here I am, 12.5 years ago, holding my oldest preemie. He was born 12 weeks early, and despite being one of the smallest babies in the NICU, he was also the loudest. Today, he’s as tall as I am.

I thought my book would be about Shakespeare using masques as liberating (hooray!), but this chapter on Love’s Labor’s Lost has some Debbie Downer vibes.

What’s that you say? Yay for women’s power and lines that celebrate Blackness? Well WHOMP WHOMP let me tell you…

What a treat to have poet Renee Agatep (@goingbyrenee.bsky.social) visit my students today and read from her moving book, Ohio Radio, about growing up in this region of the country. If you’re looking for an arts speaker on your campus, friends, I recommend her!

Had a chance to revisit Jean Howard’s Stage and Social Struggle and it holds up. It calls for some things we’re still trying to do, like learning from women-of-color feminism. I forgot how much we were all interpellating in the ‘90s, but loved remembering how this book influenced me. #earlymodern
