Ah, I love this one! My whole story is very heavily themed around memory. This snip features Prince Adavain, my MC who has a prophetic dreams, though he doubts his own ability. This is the first instance where it happens, relating to my other main character Edda.

Even still, he prodded at it. He knew that sometimes his dreams were actually memories. Was it possible it could be a memory from the future? He thought incredulously. It had never happened before, but that didn't mean it was inconceivable. He squinted his eyes shut in concentration, trying to dredge up the dream again. He'd never tried to consciously do that before either, but it was worth a shot. He felt the crisp winter air in his mind's eye as it bit his skin. The sound of his boots crunching on the snow in the forests around the capital. That was unusual. He hardly ever left the estate grounds. He let himself fall deeper. The distinctive clearing in the forest, surrounded by tall pine trees on each side. Edda sweeping the snow outside of a small cabin or hut. He had no idea if it was real. And even if it was, could he ever find that spot?

Antony was searching the King's eyes as he endeavored to keep his own unreadable. He saw that spark in them tonight, that blazing intensity that was both terrifying and incredibly alluring. It was the same draw that he felt looking into a candle's flame: dangerous, beautiful, enticing. He'd felt it before but never this strongly. He distantly knew he needed to break the contact, it was bordering on disrespect. He lowered his eyes with a concerted effort. "If his Majesty doesn't have further need of me, I will take my leave." Antony began as he turned towards the door. But the effort was immediately stymied as he felt a hand wrap firmly around his upper arm. He froze and stared at where the King held him, his large fingers tangled in his sleeve.

"What do you want?" Antony snapped. "Haven't you already made a thorough enough fool of me?" Even though his tone was carefully practiced the words still bit. His anger was no longer a novelty. It had burrowed into and made a home for itself in his chest. The man that would have been so afraid of expressing himself, let alone to the King had thoroughly been dispatched. The King flinched back. Despite himself, his mouth drifted open in surprise. He tried to form the words, the apology that he'd rehearsed on the way over. But he'd not expected such ire from Antony. It left him speechless and his mind blanked. Then he remembered Shestis' admonishment and it gave him the push to proceed. "Antony." He looked down at his lap. "I can't begin to apologize enough for yesterday. I should not have..." he paused. "I let myself get carried away. I didn't know...I never meant to hurt you so. I hope you can forgive me."

He had finally decided on the route of damage control, convincing himself that the admission to Ghosk was easier than having to explain to everyone else. He'd just changed out of his training clothes and dropped them in the laundry hamper outside of the bunks. He made his way across the training fields to the unused weapon racks where he had been accosted earlier. He saw the outline of the brick wall that was Ghosk, already waiting. Lexa sauntered up, plastering the most casual expression he could on his face. "I hope for both of our sakes that you brushed your teeth." Ghosk eyed him. "And why would ya care abou' that?" "Grooming is a thing most normal humans do." He pantomimed scrubbing his armpits. "But maybe they didn't teach you that in whatever cave you came from."

Marget bristled. Her voice was low, meant for Thali's ears only. "Seed parents are seed parents for a reason. They aren't meant to be involved." She shot a skeptical look at Tev. He had been coming to the cottage more and more frequently over the last few months. He was currently pretending to not pay attention to them. Marget only barely hid her glare. Thali grabbed her around the waist. "Wouldn't you like an evening to ourselves, my love?" She pulled her close and Marget's firm resolve relented slightly. She smelled of freshly baked bread. She turned her face to Tev. "All right. But bring her back first thing in the morning. I'll be waiting." Thali smiled and rubbed her hands along her lower back. "It's a wonder we don't have more friends, Mar. That almost sounded like a threat." But the jibe washed over Marget. She was watching Edda play in the garden as Tev walked over to her and crouched beside.

He exited onto the street which was now filled with people, milling about and consumed with their own daily tasks. He was grateful that no one even spared him a glance. He wanted to be invisible for a while. He wasn't sure where he was going, he just needed to be out of that house. His boots pounded a soothing rhythm as they hit the hard packed avenue. He let himself close his eyes for a brief moment. 'Gaia give me guidance.' he thought, brows furrowed in silent prayer. 'What have I done? How do I fix this?' He looked down at his feet.

He straightened and brushed off the twigs that had stuck to his clothes. He glanced over himself quickly to check that he hadn't stained his incredibly expensive outfit. Just the sticks then, good. He turned the corner of the maze to find Lady Efandre standing at the edge of the pergola, looking for him. He blew out a breath and walked towards her, plastering a pleasant smile on his face and ignoring his quickening heartbeat.

He sunk back into his soft down mattress, remembering his foolhardy mission. He knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that it was something he had to have done, despite the temporary setback to his healing. He wouldn't dare balk at the opportunities he was being presented with. [REDACTED] had been certain that it was Gaia intervening on their behalf. Adavain didn't claim to know anything about any of that. But he knew there was something going on. And it had renewed the ache in his chest tenfold. Beyond the physical pains of the burn, the confusing feelings of his interactions with [REDACTED] felt like they were bouncing around in his chest, heedless of what they hit or damaged in their trajectory.

Antony stared at his friend for a moment, caught between his earnest expression and the chaotic thoughts and guilt thrashing around in his mind. "I need to find someone..." he started haltingly, finding a somewhat neutral ground to broach the topic. "I've been paralyzed thinking about it. Maybe you could help me figure this out. The King..." The words involuntarily caught in his throat. He coughed, willing himself to continue. "The King," he said again with emphasis, more to himself than to Jo, "wants me to find a servant that visited him last night. He only spoke to him through the door, so I don't know what they look like or what their name is." He cringed at the thought of where he had been and what he was doing at that precise moment. "But I know the outcome is not going to be good."

She knocked primly on the door three times to Lady Efandre's chambers. The other servings girls had already had stories about his Highness' betrothed. She apparently was quite particular. That was code speak for being a bitch, Vie knew. She braced herself for the reply that followed. "Come in." the smoky voice traveled through the door. Vie opened it and bowed deeply as soon as she entered. She had rehearsed her speech to make sure she sounded compliant enough. "Lady Efandre, my name is Vie. I am to be your new lady's maid." she said before righting herself. The Lady was reclined on a divan in a beautiful pale blue silk dressing gown that hugged her slender body, reading a book. Her long brown curls were draped perfectly around her shoulders and onto her chest. She looked up at her with large blue eyes. She had no business looking that good first thing in the morning, Vie thought.

Edda stood impassively, absorbing the criticism. "He's a damned mess and if anyone finds him here or finds out he's been here, we'll be implicated. You understand that, don't you?!" "Yes, Cecily." he said quietly. "This is the exact same shit that got you in hot water in the first place. Do you like to flirt with danger? Is that it?"

"Give me your hand." she replied coolly. He tentatively reached a hand towards her. She grabbed it and turned it over, deftly pulling her ceremonial knife from her skirts. The King was about to cry out before she pricked his finger and secreted the knife again in her pocket. "Apologies for the alarm, Majesty. This is simply some insurance on my part." She squeezed his finger and the blood welled around the small wound. She closed her eyes and hummed. In her mind's eye, she chanted, 'Ydontrix Most High, bind this man's words, so that he can not betray if he refuses to cooperate.' Then took the King's fingers and smeared the blood on her lips.

The guards moved to escort his friends where from where they had been resting. He turned back to look at them longingly. Then felt the first grip on his biceps and his head whipped back around. 'Are you deaf, boy?' his father rasped as he hauled him along behind him. The prince didn't dare respond. They walked in silence until the reached the stables, where an unremarkable covered carriage, the kind used by merchants, was waiting for them. His father pulled him inside and followed in after. They were alone, another oddity. No servants or attendants, other than the groom who closed the door and climbed into the driver's seat. His father didn't utter a single word to him the entire journey.

Antony never felt it was important to impress his peers anyway, especially since they all reviled him as a flatterer. People that didn't bother to apply themselves and clearly did not care as much as he did held little esteem in his mind. The fact that Antony actually enjoyed his work didn't make him a sycophant as he'd often been accused of. Though his colleagues had used much coarser language.

He never would have been called 'pretty' even when he was perceived as a girl. He had an unremarkable round face, eyes that were a little close together and a stubby, round nose. But apparently that didn't matter, even now. Maybe it wasn't even his fault. His pace slowed to a walk, then stopped abruptly. He coughed several times and the air burned harshly with each inhale. He should not have run so hard with his chest bound so tight. He slumped against the wall of a shuttered shop, feeling suddenly weak, his fingers fumbling with the knot tied at his side under his tunic. He quickly undid the cloth wrapped around himself and felt the air, cool and fresh filling his lungs. He breathed deeply for a few moments, sinking to the cobblestones, the undone cloth flowing from under him into his lap.

He nervously glanced toward the door, pausing to listen if he had alerted any of the guards or servants outside. A moment later, he heard no movement, no rustling of keys and continued. He squatted down over the board and curled his fingers underneath its exposed edges. He pulled gently and it creaked in protest. He risked another look at the door before pulling again. It raised enough that the prince could just barely see underneath. There was a dark recess below, following the length of the board. He got up quickly to find something to cover his hands.
