She’s literally right here we’re replying to her right now :P

I really respect how Pilot shares her comic ^ I’ve been following since not long after the beginning, and her marketing has always exemplified creativity, and what can be accomplished when you pay attention to what works well.

Yh when I see a tide rising I tend to look for whose money is behind it and what they hope to accomplish

Yeah it’s also like … art communities are so big and give so much to any curious newcomer, contributing back feels like the obvious thing to do.

A functioning gift economy truly is a magical thing ✨

Despite knowing nothing about you or your situation, I’m going to call you out on that.

I highly doubt ~you personally~ are forgettable. For everyone’s self esteem, might I pose that ~for reasons beyond your control~, ~content you posted~ ended up being forgotten?

Or even just “moved on from”.

I used to assume the same opinion, but I’m no longer super convinced by The Community™️ as a good long term strategy.

On one hand, I wasn’t there (I only learned to draw in 2019)
On the other, by your own admission it’s platform dependent, and artists whose audience is artists are a minority.

I guess I have two points there.
One is that there are different kinds of connection - I’ve spoken to so many unhappy fan artists with ambitions for success in original work who regret their life choices, which feels similar to your point.

But also artists can’t be your only audience?

He gives a mountain of practical advice, whereas I feel like I’ll die on much less helpful molehill of “look after yourself, be critical of people who tell you to work super hard, successfully marketing a brand new thing from scratch (which art always is) is a collective, collaborative effort”
October 23, 2024 at 12:39 AM
I’ve been recommended it a few times, and I’ve had the sparknotes for sure. As I understand, his emphasis is on doing whatever builds long term meaningful connection - so, creating opportunities where attracting “shared influence” is likely, but not necessarily counting on it as a silver bullet?

I'm sorry this isn't especially actionable, but if it makes acting on any of the ~good advice~ you get any easier, or takes the edge off of any of the uncertainty I know this subject always gives me, I'll take that as a win 😅

Tech startups *live and breathe* on their press coverage. Specialist PR firms have been minted and textbooks have been written and sold on *every kind and phase of coverage that there is*.
If marketing makes you uncertain, frustrated or sad, or it feels like an uneven playing field ... *YES*
October 22, 2024 at 11:37 PM
There's a really reassuring takeaway here, which is that some capitalist tech entrepreneur (which is what platform owners are, even the nice ones) telling you "do marketing better" is up there with oil barons telling you to "reuse your shopping bags" as top tier personal responsibility gaslighting.

This was an externally observable opportunity and sure stumbling into it is lucky, but it also goes to show your best marketing opportunities are probably also pre-existing and observable with the right research.
For want of a better term, "Press" work can still be systematised and intentional.
October 22, 2024 at 11:29 PM
I have a lot of friends who would call their growth "luck", on account of having made no intentional decisions in their marketing, and yet made work that appealed to (for example) Webtoons' key demographic of Female, Gen Z comic fans, during the company's years of fastest growth.

Even rapid organic growth on a platform, maybe a feature, but even if it's at the hands of a faceless algorithm shows that you're a key match for an existing high-engagement group in a platform's network, and is in itself a kind of influencer shout-out.

I investigated this a bit on the side while doing my MSc dissertation on an adjacent topic.

In short, reach is given not gained, and all effective efforts are best accompanied by some kind of influence/r campaign - press, people with good contacts, etc.
