In response to the abuse, many of the women began a hunger strike, leading prison doctors to force-feed them through tubes, causing further pain. The harsh treatment and brutality became public knowledge, and the resulting public outcry helped shift public opinion in favor of women’s suffrage. /end

On Nov. 14, 1917, the suffragists were moved to the Occoquan Workhouse, where the guards were ordered to beat and brutalize them. Some were chained and left in dark, filthy cells. Others were severely injured, including Dora Lewis, who was thrown against an iron bed and knocked unconscious. /3
