William Zinsser (On Writing Well) suggested "however" as early in the sentence as possible (just not the first word).

Try the local library (of course), but my daughter enjoyed the Wilma Tenderfoot series when she was about that age.

Without those requirements, I would have never found my calling. I am sad for all the young people who won't have the opportunity to meander a bit in their studies and discover their passions. We are diminished as a society with such limited and limiting visions of what education should be.

A short time later, I switched majors and am now in my 29th year as a HS English teacher.

As an engineering major paying my own way, annoyed that I had to take a humanities req.

Settled on Western Lit. My 1st paper was reurned dripping in red ink. Felt lucky to walk away with a B- but it was some positive comments from my professor that stayed with me.
