The only person who I've seen disagree with eLife's decision despite also disagreeing with Eisen's tweet is...the University of Chicago guy who hired a sex pest under the sketchiest circumstances imaginable.

When I defended my PhD, 1 comm. member joined from home via Zoom. But he forgot to pay his wifi bill & it got cut off 2 hours before my defense.
If something like this happened when he submitted a GRFP letter for me at the last minute, a backup would prevent me from being automatically disqualified.

They only ask you for three letters. You have the option to include two backup letter writers in case one or two of your top choices have some kind of emergency.

When I applied for the GRFP, my soon-to-be mentor asked me to add his name as my #4 choice. He submitted a letter for me a week before the deadline, in case one of my top 3 choices messed up the submission process or had a personal emergency. No one was dishonest, no one got duped.
