As noted in the film's Wikipedia page: "Seconds became known for its connection to the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson. The story, which originated in the October 1967 magazine article 'Goodbye Surfing, Hello God!', goes that when he arrived late to a theater showing of Seconds, he appeared to be greeted with the onscreen dialogue, 'Come in, Mr. Wilson.' ('Wilson" was a character Hudson played in the film.) He was convinced for some time that rival producer Phil Spector (one of the film's investors) was taunting him through the movie, and that it was written about his recent traumatic experiences and intellectual pursuits, going so far as to note that 'even the beach was in it, a whole thing about the beach.' He later cancelled the Beach Boys' forthcoming album Smile, and the film reportedly frightened him so much that he did not visit another movie theater until 1982's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial."

I often associate Mingus with Sam Peckinpah--another larger-than-life curmudgeon--and the line from his masterpiece THE WILD BUNCH spoken by a Mexican village elder: "We all dream of being a child again, even the worst of us. Perhaps the worst most of all."
Paul Desmond was the alto saxophonists for the Dave Brubeck Quartet, known for his lyricism and filigree-free playing: “His friends tell of his last weeks, when an old friend, jazz legend Charles Mingus, appeared at his apartment draped in a swirling black cape and a matching Spanish cowboy hat. He stood in silent vigil at Desmond's bedside. Then slowly, Desmond awoke. Looking up, he searched his memory, trying to make sense of the image looming before him. Finally, it clicked -- the hooded harvester from Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal. 'Okay, set up the chess board.' And he grinned.”

Episode "To Serve Man" (1962) from the original TWILIGHT ZONE TV series. An alien race ("Kanamites" represented here by their Leader played by Richard Kiel) comes to Earth, promising peace and sharing technology. Linguists Michael Chambers, Patricia Brody, and their team set out to translate the aliens' language, using a book whose title they deduce to be "To Serve Man." Twist: At episode's end, as humans are being herded onto huge spaceships to "tour" the Kanamite home world, one of the distraught linguists frantically tries to warn everyone that he's cracked the code, translated the text and that "...it's a cookbook!"

Watched A MAN AND A WOMAN for like the thousandth time. I can never start watching it and not see it all the way through to the end. Finally --FINALLY--dawned on me that I'm in love with Anouk Aimée. Ever since the moment I first saw her, and somehow, impossibly, even before that.

Alas.

Opening sequence in 8 1/2 wherein the dreaming "Guido Anselmi" (Marcello Mastroianni) tries to fly away from his stress and angst-filled life as a philandering movie director during a period where his creativity is blocked, and his marriage is crumbling amidst the making of his ninth film. Widower "Jean-Louis Duroq"(Jean-Louis Trintignant) and widow "Anne Gauthier" (Anouk Aimée) navigate the shifting terrain of finding new love while each is still emotionally bonded (Anne especially) to their dead spouse. The mysterious stranger (Charles Bronson) confronts three gunmen sent to kill him in Leone's meditative revenge western which also serves as a kind of creation myth of the flawed gods that created the American frontier. After his spaceship's on-board computer malfunctions and kills his fellow astronauts, "Dave Bowman"(Keir Dullea) pursues a mysterious black monolith, an artifact presumably created by an advanced alien race) through the orbit of Jupiter which includes a kaleidoscopic Star Gate, Bowman's passage through which will mark his and mankind's evolution into a higher-level, God-like existence.
