The US’s right to build bases unencumbered on Greenland is guaranteed only so long as the US is a part of NATO. So strategically, ownership of Greenland is needed if you plan the leave NATO.

Sure, ask that. Also ask if in a free country an unarmed person should expect to be executed for obstruction? Or if being scared and running away deserves a summary judgment of death? Or if exercising your right to protest should result in being shot in the face? How free is a country like that?
