One thing I've mentioned in recent classes is ending your game. There are countless ways to accomplish this, but it helps to have a figurative "clock" or "timer" built in that forces the end in a timely manner.

I wrote about it at SCM last year: www.skeletoncodemachine.com/p/the-final-...

Not to scale.

This game design activity is silly, but fun and teaches some lessons about theme vs. mechanism. Rolling up JUNGLE VIKINGS, SKELETON DETECTIVES, and FROG RACING will never not be funny to me.

Another hands-on I covered during yesterday's webinar!

Missed the webinar I did yesterday on "How to run a tabletop game design workshop at your library" for the Indiana State Library?

No problem! It was recorded and will be up on YouTube in about a week. I gave 5 things you can do to make your workshop a success.

This hands-on "make a bad game on purpose" activity has been extremely well received each time.

Is it even a presentation if it doesn't have a Venn diagram?

Just realized this Tumulus design only works for 99 issues. If my math is correct, that means the final issue will be Fall 2049.

Unless the issue numbers are actually hexadecimal... 🤔

Thank you so much to professors and students at Dickinson for allowing me to join them for the day. Everyone was engaged and made it an enjoyable time on a beautiful campus.

I'd love to do it again some day!

It was a perfect fall day on campus too, which made the experience even better.

"That snake draft at the start of the game is extremely important to the overall success of each player. Knowing which racer to put out for the low-value first race vs. the high-value final race is critical."
November 4, 2025 at 12:18 PM
"Depending on the power of the racer (e.g. “Trip any racer that stops on my space.” or “When I stop on a space with exactly one other racer, they’re eliminated from the race.”), the power is only triggered when the conditions are met."
