That is one way putting it.
Personally it's more a case of applying a visual effect in the background that gives off the immediate sensation that's about to rise. Kind of like how you have those "Menace" kanji appear in JJBA scenes or such alike when an emotion occurs in someone's mind - visualized

Adding to it, the background could also change into some specific pattern to bring in the sort of atmosphere the soon-to-grow-character is about to experience: squiggly lines for fear or horror, bubbles or glowing for how wonderful/lustful it is, fiery effect for how the power in them is ignited....

An alternative could also be how a scene starts focusing more on the character while the background around them is either becoming blurrier, darkened or otherwise fades into obscurity, to signify how unimportant they are compared to the ensuing growth that's about to occur on the affected.
