I reverse engineer obsolete software/games and have a weird obsession with eink and Palm devices.
The rate of side-projects is intensifying, as shown by number of registered domains per week 😅

I love how Claude Code helps me overcome "writer's block" on my side-projects. I wanted to write this podcast player since forever (it's highly customized to my usecase, sync server and device) but couldn't bring myself to do RSS parsing for the thousandth time in my career 🥱

Here's a piece of confetti I saved from when we launched Citymapper Pass (www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2019...)
It was the first product at Citymapper I worked on 0 to 1. Took us 3 months I think? People liked it! It worked! It was EXCITING!

Tonight's project- THE ICON! this is not going to win any design awards, but kinda fits in with the rest of the system, which is what I'm going for 😅

It's 2025, and I just want to be able to sync my iPod on my new Linux laptop, without gtkpod crashing or rhythmbox messing up my library.

A few days later:

Good to see the team branching out!

Dug up my old iPod recently. These things are awesome, I completely forgot they have mechanical hard drives you can hear and feel as you’re using them

The coolest jacket I own.

A couple of years ago, I started playing with PalmOS development. Code/Syntax/Capabilities were pretty limited obviously, but I was amazed by how little mobile development workflows have changed. look at this thing! IDE + Emulator/Simulator. This stuff is from 20-30 years ago!

And inside, a single NSLog();
Someone forgot to remove a debug print in the shipping binary! at some point this was a web app, running in a UIWebView... in fact Ken Kocienda and Richard Williamson mention this in their CHM interview www.youtube.com/watch?v=xImA...

Scroll all the way at the bottom of WeatherController and we find webView:runJavaScriptAlertPanelWithMessage:
If you've done any WebKit work you know what this is: One of the WKUIDelegate's methods! 👌👌👌 (developer.apple.com/documentatio...)

The shipped binary is just your regular Cocoa/ObjC MVC app. Some controllers, view and model objects. Nothing too interesting. BUT....

Another favourite is the original Weather.app, with a cool origin story - starting out as an iPhone optimized version of the weather dashboard widget from OS X >>>

If you look closely at the UITextViewLegacy methods, you'd see some references to styles and web objects. internally all the way up to iOS 7, the system was using WebKit for rendering! you'd set your styles using ObjC, that would turn to CSS behind the scenes. >>>

For a long while after shipping the iPhone SDK, there was a lot of duplication between the UIKit classes used by Apple (UITextViewLegacy, UITable for example) and the publicly facing ones (UITextView, UITableView) >>>

I used to do a ton of iOS archeology back in the day. My favourite was looking at old iPhone OS and look at all the crazy stuff they did to ship! >>>

Oh and vids look even worse, so I guess going with a flip back in the day was the right choice? 😅

Quality is slightly lacking in low light conditions but I guess that's part of the fun??

This one is: tiny-er, purple-er, works as a usb webcam(!) and takes stills(!!)

Anyway, when I came back I got curious, what was I missing back in the '10s and is now super cheap on eBay? The Panasonic HM-TA1!
