Most people these days have a completely distorted idea of what a RPG is and should be. They confuse RPG and « open world sandbox ». There is this weirdass obsession with exploration and « freedom ». That’s not what roleplaying is about…

« Pastime » is such a sad, reductive way of looking at videogames. Some don’t try to be much more than that, sure, but videogames are also often art and/or an experience.

Litteraly the opposite for me. Ubisoft needs to grow balls and stop this “play as you want” BS. COMMIT into a gameplay and polish it as much as you can. SW Outlaws should have been like 90% stealth, you’re one little scoundrel going against hundreds of criminals and soldiers…

A Star Wars movie by the creator Banshee and the director of Deadpool & Wolverine ? Did i read that right…? Why…? That sounds unappealing as hell.

Unfortunately i think the reason the industry cares less about storytelling is because the average gamer nowadays cares less about storytelling.

I never said urgency is a necessary element. What i meant is if there’s an urgency then the game should respect it.

What’s sad is since launch their focus has been to make the game even more open world with more distractions and side content (new cars, new appartments, new gigs, etc…). You have to catter to a certain crowd to make money in this industry unfortunately.

No, your character is on an urgent quest to save people. He/she is not some “explorer” looking for “loot” and “secret bosses” all around the “map”. That’s you. It’s fine if that’s what you enjoy, but you’re not roleplaying then.

If you’re talking about Veilguard you have to remember that they are using the Eluvians to travel, so it takes very little to go from place to place. I like it, it makes much more sense than in Inquisition where you constantly traveled around the world for small tasks.

So you don’t like RPGs, you like sandboxes.

The pacing in Cyberpunk 2077 is a HUGE failure though. It makes no sense for V to participate in side activities and waste time while litteraly on a race against time to avoid dying… Focusing on the story/main side quests really elevates its narrative and emotional experience.

I respect it as long as they aren’t straight up lying. Like for exemple most people pretending Dragon Age Veilguard is all Disney fun and giggles. 12 hours in so far and i’ve seen plenty of death, blood and dread. My character even left a dude get devoured by monsters as punishment for his deeds 🤷🏻‍♂️

Most people today confuse RPG and sandbox and i fully blame Bethesda for that. Roleplaying isn’t and has never been about « freedom » and « exploration ».

Today’s gamers don’t deserve videogames. Whiny, ungrateful and incredibly entitled bunch. They don’t realize how goddamn lucky they are.
