The Gaunt's Ghosts series is fantastic but it will make you very sad.
The Ciaphas Cain books are funny and very entertaining, the first one is a good intro to the Guard and Commissars.
Try Flesh & Steel or Bloodlines for some crime noir with a 40K bent.
