The twin decks and the Nine of Diamonds. Note on the Nine of Diamonds: The Curse of Scotland. "Three of many possible reasons why the Nine of Diamonds is thus known are: This card in the game Pope Joan is called the Pope, anti-christ of the Scottish reformers. In the game Comette, introduced by Mary Queen of Scots, it was the great winning card. The game was the curse of Scotland because it ruined so many. Curse is a corruption of the word Cross. The nine diamonds are arranged to form a St Andrew's Cross - but so are the other nines. Note by Monica Clough, Stirling University. Close up of the Nine of Diamonds - the central pip has a heavy black border, indicating its "cursed" reputation.
