Historian of work, energy, industry and protest. Author of Coal Country. Now writing An Injury to All: The Unmaking of the British Working Class. Not getting that much more right wing as I get older.
This one has been in the pipeline (no pun intended!) for a fair while. I was fortunate to have a British Academy-Wolfson fellowship which gave me time to do the research and writing.

Brilliant stuff. Also a big fan of this number by Archie Fisher who sadly passed away recently. It refers to Cromarty.

My sons they have grown an’ away they have flown,
Tae search for black oil in the far northern sea.
Like oilmen they walk an’ like Yankees they talk,
There’s no much in common ’tween my sons an’ me…

Some of the illustrations are fantastic. There are a few of prominent individuals but they are predominantly depictions of a vibrant movement.

I think the use of the term ‘social revolution’ is very interesting given the strictly ‘reformist’ orientation of dominant trends in the TUC in the late 1960s and before and since then. It again points towards a firm belief in the progressive collectivist direction of society.

There are some examples of left or labour movement equivalents. For instance the Institute for Workers' Control pamphlet series is available online, which is very helpful. There isn't an equivalent Clement Attlee or Harold Wilson foundation though! www.socialistrenewal.net/iwc-pamphlet...
