If any of my mountain peeps in the SEKY/SWVA area wants to share this around, we are trying to fill some bellies and get some toys to kids in need.

Yesterday, over 25 folks gathered in the public library in Middlesboro, KY, to watch a documentary screening about the movement they’ve created showing support for Cumberland Gap National Historical Park and its rangers while the new admin. tries to rip it apart. 🧵 1/4

Have spent a couple cloudy, drizzly days bouncing around NC/SC practicing photography with my dad. One year post Helene, it still hurts to see remaining damage and compare with SWVA

Pieces of the monument to labor that was community-designed for a small park in downtown Pound, VA. Both artists working on the piece have deep ties to coal and these are just a few of the elements. Every detail, down to the book titles, came from local residents and is tied to a personal story.

Got to visit an AML site for work up near Clinchco in Dickenson County! Absolutely taken over with invasive autumn olive but full of wildlife and ready for a new reclamation journey

Flood relief day out in Dante (rhymes with paint). Once again, our holler communities highlight the need for more resources to help with culverts and driveways washed out by stormwater. VDOT says not them, FEMA says not them, the county doesn’t own them, and folks still can’t get to their homes

Dante (pronounced Daint) VA flooded again Friday. Dante is surrounded by former mine lands and poorly reclaimed sites, with aging infrastructure, exacerbating the damage from flash floods. If you don’t know it, you should: Dante helped power and build America. We NEED FEMA for mitigation funds.

MIA: House Rep Morgan Griffith, who won’t even meet with constituents who travelled over 8 hours to DC. He was doing a photo op elsewhere at a hospital that heavily relied on Medicaid, which he just voted to slash.

DC Day 2
July 9, 2025 at 10:50 PM
DC Day 1: We done brought up a group of mountain girlies from SWVA to talk to congressional staff about our awarded grants that have been cancelled. The funds include stuff for energy resiliency, disaster safety, recreation and econ. development, and flood mitigation. Rep. Griffith isn’t even here.

Fireworks weren’t quite sitting right today, all things considered, so Elvis and I decided to hit the woods and the chanterelles were popping!

Back at it for No Kings and Save Our Parks! The coalfields continue to show up and show out. A local clickbait radio station mentioned this protest and we got a big increase in death threats but so far ain’t no one showed up to yell at us.

Pretty proud of this one! Homemade strawberry cream sponge cake! Made the jam from scratch with fresh berries from Mann Farms- if you’re in SWVA, you know the power of Mann strawberries

Down here in the rural coalfields, we might not turn out the huge crowds (and the Dropkick Murphies) like in Boston but we had a good steady stream of local folks out at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park today
