Views, my own.
It was an absolute honour to give a talk with the fabulous @anatomicalcat.bsky.social in collaboration with the also fabulous @drtrishbiers.bsky.social in a session chaired by none other than the @hunterianmuseum.bsky.social ‘s Dawn Kemp, at #iammc2025!

Petition to remove the aristocratic title bit from 'landLORD' and 'landLADY" to remind them that tenants are not actually their subjects.
Considering landhoarder, wage-sucker, or maybe rent-leech as alternatives, but they don't quite roll off the tongue 🤔

Suggestions welcome!

As uncomfortable as these diagrams may seem, they don't hold a candle (or oil lamp) to their 19th century predecessors! Note the cringey lack of gloves.

The cystoscope in the meme is obviously a rigid one, but I'm annoyed to not be able to find the original source of the illustration and the exact model. Here's a similar one of a flexible cystoscope applied to both typical sets of urinary organs:

Irish physician, friend of pugs, and @tcddublin.bsky.social alum improved on the design of the instrument and performed the 1st successful endoscopy in 1865. #BAUSUrology has a great little video about his endoscope: www.baus.org.uk/museum/10/cr...

A cystoscope is an endoscope - a tool to see inside the body using a thin tube & a light source, at its simplest form. The first endoscope was invented by German physician Phillip Bozzini in 1807. It looked even less friendly than the cystoscope in the meme 😬

This is what I wrote on the forum btw, and while I did there was a fleeting moment where I thought, ‘is this professional enough?’
The sheer absurdity of having to even consider appearing professional while human beings are deliberately and systematically being starved to death, is maddening.

Random curious tidbit I just stumbled upon while looking for historical remedies for hysteria in an 1872 issue of the Chemist & Druggist serial on @archive.org 🐈‍⬛ 🩸🩸🩸Published under the ‘Gossip’ column. #medicalhumanities #folkmedicine #historyofmedicine #donttrythisathome

That’s basically why I’m sharing a cat pic at such a moment. Hope someone else benefits! Here’s another, for good measure. Not a care in the world.

I’m so jealous of him. He knows nothing of dictators, or ethnic cleansing, or world wars. He just gets to sit on his little sofa and be cute 🥲 #caturday

In personal news, after much deliberation as to where my research on displaying the dead in Ireland would fit, I applied and got accepted into the @ucdsociology.bsky.social programme under Dr Barbara Gornicka’s watchful eye.

Everything is terrible, but I’m excited to start in September! 😅

In Hamburg, one hour ahead from IST, and about 50 years back in hotel decor. I was honestly sad I didn’t have trousers to press.

In love with yesterday’s #archivefind in the @oldanatomytcd.bsky.social #medicalheritage collection. Likely a turn of the century skiagraph (early form of x-ray) of a human skull, captured at an unusual angle. Such a striking image!

Treatment includes the replacement of thyroid hormone via daily meds.
* Fwiw (NB: I'm not an MD) I found that porcine-derived thyroid hormone to be vastly more tolerable than L-thyroxine.

Apropos of a conversation with a friend and potential fellow sufferer, here's a brief guide to #Hashimoto's hypothyroidism. It's an under-diagnosed #autoimmune disorder that causes a bevy of common seemingly unrelated symptoms, like depression & fatigue

I have some questions about their medical history form too…

It’s giving 18th century 🧐

I’m hoping they’ll let me listen to @anthrofuentes.bsky.social’s excellent book instead 🤞🏻

Behold! My stripey child pulling all the stops in his quest to be ridiculously adorable 🥹

Gotta say, of all evolutionary strategies, the fact that cats have achieved not only survival but domination of the human universe through cuteness is pure genius.

This one I particularly love in its simplicity. The text is a page from a study notebook on ancient Greek.
