By the way for anyone who cared about this. 245/45/18 fit on the factory rims with factory suspension setup just fine. There's no rubbing or fitment issues. Its really close though, so if the car isn't totally stock your mileage may vary.

Probably a combination of low sidewall height combined with less and less well maintained US roads.
