Finno-Ugrian is probably the safest category to put Kalevala under, but there's no real agreement how to classify it.

There are Finnish people who will say that Karelians are Finnish and thus Kalevala is also Finnish, but not all Karelians will agree.

Hi, a quick heads up on some discourse going around about Kalevala in Finland: the stories gathered for the book feature Karelian and possibly Sami mythos as well, but Lönnrot and thus history claimed Kalevala as purely Finnish (so basically cultural appropriation).
