Started learning guitar as my first instrument in April (tried piano, it was too hard) and here's my take of Mr. Sandman as arranged by Chet Atkins ☺️ I even added a few things too!

Animation of a zoom in from about 100 parsecs away to Earth, made 100% in Blender using Eevee render engine w/ render times below 7 secs on gtx1050 graphics card. Data used from NASA SVS website for most textures, including a cloud simulation! Also from the Hipparcos mission of the ESA, someone made a csv file of the stars with colors, distances, and magnitudes. Blender has issues when dealing with large and small scenes, and float point limitations (computers can only do so much) so the distances are not accurate, but I tried my best. I think I can achieve near perfect accuracy in a few weeks of messing around with linking cameras at diff scales. I can also use geojson data here. Looking at plate techtonics data and milky way data, but that might require help. I can get data in and with great accuracy, but I'm doing all this on a potato, and with only 20 GB of free storage space at a time, in eevee, so I may have to table this again (for now). Hope someone thinks this is cool!

Finally figured it out! Had to use a strange file type called "openvdb", which is basically just a file for volumes, which is what a dust cloud is. This gives me infinitely higher resolution than using a point cloud. Took forever because I don't know how to code. Check out the alt text for more

The view from the sun of the aquila rift. The dust data was imported as a volume and lit from behind by a spherical picture of the night sky. It's hard to tell what's data and what's not! Well, considering they made the picture in the background from data, it's really all data.

Without the spherical picture behind it, this is just the dust. Looks amazing.

But the dust was downloaded from zenodo. Thank God there was an xyz version of the data already made, otherwise this might've been too hard for me to do. I used ChatGPT to make a python script to load this into Blender as an openvdb file (an arduous process because ChatGPT makes me viscerally uncomfortable to use, and is often not right about anything, but it was better than me reading up on any of this)

This whole process has felt very much like stealing, but it's not like I expect myself to have ever been capable of something like this, and it's only a part of my larger project, so I've been trying to fight off the imposter syndrome that comes with downloading something someone else made and going "hahaha, it is mine now, I made this"

Still figuring out my approach to start modeling the milky way (something which is difficult, code heavy, and completely unnecessary for my current project but idc) so I'm taking a step back from that to continue getting the planetary orbits figured out. Turns out, they're complicated!

found some NASA stuff and put together this little animation in Blender. Eevee render too, so it's fast. Wish I knew how to do a fluid sim or even a flowmap for Jupiter's clouds. I tried, but it was just out of my depth for now
