Evan Thompson
@evanthompson.bsky.social
Philosopher, writer.
Here's the definition (as restated in a recent paper I did with Ezequiel Di Paolo and Randall Beer). Erik's robot is not a network of processes of production, let alone one that meets (i) and (ii).

Last but not least, Bergson himself. Donald Landes has recently retranslated Bergson's classic, L'Évolution créatrice (1907).

This is my favourite philosophical treatment of the continuing importance of Bergson's thought.

@canales.bsky.social book (in the previous post) had a huge influence on my recent book with @adamfrank4.bsky.social and Marcelo Gleiser, The Blind Spot. Bergson is one of the heroes of our book (along with Whitehead and Husserl).

"in recent years there has been a kind of Bergson revival in the anglophone world. Could it be because there is a need for a return to his ideas?" Yes! From @emilyherring.bsky.social's delightful biography of Bergson. Here's a thread-guide to more of the revival. Start with Herring's fantastic book!

A question for people who know Robert Rosen's work: what's the current status of his claim (and purported mathematical proof) that MR systems aren't Turing-computable? I've read most of the (few) relevant papers on this but am not competent to judge and there seems to be no clear consensus.

Dan Dennett in Farmstead Magazine. Dan would take his students and postdocs to press apples and bottle cider at his Maine farm. He sent the article to me when I told him about our apple trees in BC. I learned how to make cider from his article.

Dan Dennett was an exceptionally generous mentor when I did a postdoc with him in '90-'91. Years later he kept encouraging me even when we disagreed. It is a sad day and the world has shrunk with his passing.
