Hello. I’m retired from a judicial career, living 7 months a year in Mexico, summers in Eastern Washington. I share with many a deep concern for the future of American democracy, and lament the resurgence of anti-intellectualism.
No, they’re not. Violations of CRIMINAL laws (federal or state) are crimes. Violation of civil laws may give rise to suits to enforce the laws, restrain further violations, sometimes recover damages, but they’re not crimes.

C’mon, let’s keep it real. Violations of those federal laws are actionable in court (thank God), but aren’t crimes. Only violations of criminal laws are crimes.

Settlements don’t set precedents, any more than private contracts do. Court decisions set precedents.

Enemy to one writer, not to patients. You don’t need attention, so you don’t tell a strep throat patient, “I suspect throat cancer” just so she’ll listen to you. Writers do that.

Someone I love, instead of saying (for example) “I coughed repeatedly,” says “I coughed and I coughed and I coughed and I coughed…” etc., ad nauseum.
