[he/him] Software researcher, inventor, erstwhile linguist, book lover, bad bassist, former youth soccer ref and baseball coach, Stanford grad, proud dad, and devoted husband.

AUE regular back when Usenet was a thing. (Yeah, ASCII/IPA was me.)
I was a computer science researcher for thirty years. I can probably count in one hand the number of times I had a "time limit" that was measured in less than (multiple) days. And on no hands the number of times it was closed book.

When is this app going to add a “groan” button?

He's about 80% of the way to "The government should just pay the healthcare providers directly for the care the people need."

Oh no argument from me here, and I apologize if I made it sound that way.

To be fair, in Franklin's case, at least, at the time, you had to be alive when nominated for the Nobel, and she died in 1958, four years before Watson, Crick, and Wilkins received it.

I don't know if they've tweaked their rules on this since then, but as of 2015, they said that for non-medical doctors, they use the title "only if it is germane to the holder's primary current occupation", only if it's earned, and only if requested to.

As far as I know there's only one other Evan Kirshenbaum in the country (probably the world), a lawyer in Rhode Island.

And yes, I do occasionally get email and texts intended for him.

In Japan, the games are called after 12 because, in Tokyo, at least, everybody takes the train.

Mountain View hasn't been 60K in over 40 years. We're close to 90K now.

I missed the "LWV" on her super-shirt!

I love the fact that, not only from the protestors but also from the honking cars driving by, an American flag is understood to be a show of *support* for the protest.

We've reclaimed the symbol.

Yeah but everybody already knows that Silicon Valley is just a bunch of liberals.

Just had an inflatable Lorax tell me, "Let's dump that other orange guy!"

We debated whether to stay local or join the mobs in San Jose. Ultimately, we choose local, but for the next big one I suspect it may be worth it to get truly massive numbers in fewer places.

Pretty much everybody else is honking in support.

Got my first driver shouting "Make America great again" at me.

I responded, "We're trying!"

I'm not sure that's the first time, but possibly when my mom brought home this album.

My grandfather once said that Polish was what the Polish kids in town never let him and his sisters forget that they weren't.

They were from Toronto, so probably not in any detail. (Or eastern Washington or parts of California.)

The media thing hits both ways. They mainly hear about the sane parts of Oregon the same way we hear about the crazy parts of, e.g., South Carolina.

I just got back from a trip to Japan with Canadians who said that they'd be happy to take California, Oregon, and, Washington if it wasn't for the fact that we'd double their population.

To be fair, there are still contemporaneous pages up from from ABC News, Vox, and KQED that give it as "assemblage", so a human search might have come up with the same wording.

I'm not much into chess, but I've always liked fairy chess variants.

I'd play that.

I have no problem with blood draws. For labs and donating blood, I prefer to watch the needle going in.

I had an arterial blood draw once.

I fainted.
