Here is the statement that I just got from NIOSH on the status of the National Firefighter Registry for Cancer, perhaps the most ambitious effort to date to understand the firefighting-cancer connection. This is a huge deal.

A little good news: no outstanding resource requests and available prepo’s in SoCal. All federal air tankers committed and a large portion of federal rotor wing fleet too. Containment going up.

Congress has two opportunities to make the pay raises for federal wildland firefighters permanent (the approps bill or the disaster supplemental). Its time to get it done and give firefighters fair pay.
