I am a climate scientist, focused on paleoclimate, sea level change and the evolution of Quaternary glaciations.
I reconstruct ice sheets using glacial isostatic adjustment and ice sheet modelling. In Japan but have been all over the place. 🇨🇦🇯🇵🇦🇺🇩🇪🇸🇪

The expansion of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet during the last glacial period only amounted to about 2-3 m of global sea level. The DML glacier would only be a small portion of that.

Lots of people do. There is no shortage of people advertising their Substack, for instance. I read blogs!

I was looking into rare earths a couple of weeks ago. Apparently the largest deposits in the US were monazite, which has the unfortunate thing of producing radioactive tailings. It is expensive to keep clean.

I enjoyed it! It definitely gave me some things to think about regarding Middle Pleistocene glaciations.

Of course, in Japanese, it would be more like 計算的の地球科学

My undergraduate degree was in geophysics, but they had a heavy helping of geology courses with it (almost all of the second year classes were required). I ended up taking geochemistry and geology field school as electives, but in my opinion, those should be required. Both courses served me well.

I definitely heard of the de Vries effect, but had no idea he was a psychopath!

(I say this as someone who took 5 years to finish my undergraduate degree)

I have seen the other side too - modellers who lack basic geological knowledge and do things that contradict the geological record. There should be balance, but also take care not to make undergraduate degrees that would take 5 years to complete.
