Then, when states adopted NALs after Narcan’s introduction, the improvements in access continued (~12.5 additional claims per 100k) and the reductions in opioid-related mortalities grew (8/N)

In states with existing NALs, Narcan’s introduction catalyzed a rapid and significant increase in naloxone dispensing by ~9.1 additional claims per 100k, much larger than the effects of NALs alone. This led to a significant reduction in opioid-related age-adjusted mortality (7/N)

However previous studies show that NALs alone did not reduce non-synthetic (non-fentanyl) opioid-related mortality. Our results indicate that the training required to administer is an important reason why. Once launched in Feb 2016, Narcan rapidly dominated the market (6/N)

Naloxone helps reverse opioid overdose fxs by competing for opioid receptor sites in the CNS. While FDA approved in 1971, the medical provider prescription requirement kept access low throughout the early waves of the opioid crisis (4/N)
