Sierra Leone's Gola Rainforest National Park, part of the Upper Guinean Forest, has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Home to endangered wildlife including Chimpanzees and Pygmy Hippos, it locks away 19 million tonnes of carbon. The RSPB-backed project supports local communities while safeguarding biodiversity and tackling climate change.

The Slender-billed Curlew is gone. A paper published today concluded that there is a 99.6% chance that the species is extinct, likely dying off around the time of the last irrefutable sighting in 1995.
