My point here is that Democrats cannot assume that the establishment media will be on their team or do the hard work of opposition for them, allowing national Democrats to be in some way above the fray.

What Dems should *not* do is wait for the establishment press to cover this stuff wall-to-wall and then whine when they don't. I'm sorry, but that's loser talk.
Lots of political science research shows that news coverage reflects the balance of messages from elite partisan/governmental sources.
